A historic Montalcino estate once owned by the Piccolomini family, relatives of Pope Pius II, Abbadia Ardenga farms roughly 10 hectares of 100% Sangiovese and won its first major wine award in 1902. The traditionally styled Brunello, including the single-vineyard Vigna Piaggia, was long overseen by Mario Ciacci, who served about 15 years as a director of the Brunello Consorzio.
