Abreu Vineyards belongs to David Abreu, the viticulturist whose vineyard work sits behind many of Napa Valley's most famous Cabernets. He founded his own label in 1980 and released his first vintage in 1987, drawing on vineyards he planted and farms himself, including Madrona Ranch near St. Helena and the 20-acre Thorevilos Vineyard. The wines are Cabernet-based blends from single sites, made in small quantities and sold mainly through a mailing list. Critics have rewarded them repeatedly: Robert Parker gave the 1997 Madrona Ranch 100 points, and by the 2021 vintage the winery had collected twelve 100-point scores. Abreu's 1995 Cabernet blend also won the 2006 Judgment of Sauternes blind tasting. Richard Forman worked with Abreu in the early years, and Brad Grimes is a key member of the team. For collectors, Abreu stands as one of the clearest examples of a grower turning his own farming into a top tier Napa wine.
