In 2003, after 35 years as an engineer by day and home winemaker by night, Bob Tillman found the 130-acre hilltop property in Paso Robles' Adelaida District that would become Alta Colina Vineyard. Peaking at 1,800 feet of elevation with steep, fractured shale soils just 14 miles from the Pacific, the site's diurnal swings and salt air proved ideal for Rhône varieties; the 31-acre estate vineyard was planted in 2005. Bob's daughter Maggie joined the operation in 2008, and the winery remains a family affair, producing around 2,000 cases a year of estate-grown wines with minimal intervention while selling the remaining fruit to other Central Coast Rhône producers. Signature bottlings include the GSM blend, Toasted Slope Estate Syrah (named for the southwest-facing hillside where it's grown), and Claudia Cuvée Marsanne. Alta Colina has become known as one of Paso Robles' most scenic vineyards and one of the Central Coast's most acclaimed Rhône specialists.
