Amulet takes its name from the Latin amulētum, an object thought to carry good fortune. The 20-acre hillside estate sits north of St. Helena in what was long called Dego Valley and is now Italian Valley, and it has changed identity more than once: software executive and thriller novelist Robert Brooks and his wife Paula ran it as Dancing Hares, tunneling a cave and building a Howard Backen-designed winery completed in 2009, with Andy Erickson and Philippe Melka among the winemakers who worked the cellar. Tuck Beckstoffer, son of grower Andy Beckstoffer, bought it in 2016. Under the Amulet name the farming is organic and deliberately low-tech — no GMOs or synthetics, with animal husbandry, pollinator habitat and companion native plantings — and the fruit is picked early to hold acidity across a range that spans valley floor to mountaintop sites.
