Banfi Wines

Banfi Wines traces to 1919, when John Mariani Sr. began importing Italian wine from a shop in Manhattan's Little Italy, a year before Prohibition took hold. His sons John and Harry Mariani built the family business into one of the largest wine importers in the US, then in 1978 turned to producing wine themselves, purchasing roughly 7,100 acres in Montalcino, Tuscany, at a time when Brunello di Montalcino was still largely unknown outside Italy. Working with enologist Ezio Rivella, the Marianis restored the estate's medieval castle and built Castello Banfi into one of the region's largest producers, helping establish Brunello's international reputation. The company remains solely owned by the Mariani family, now led by third-generation CEO Cristina Mariani-May, and its US portfolio spans Tuscan reds, Chianti Classico, Piedmontese sparkling wines through the historic Bruzzone label, and the Rosa Regale sparkling Brachetto.
