Beaulieu Vineyard, known to wine lovers simply as BV, is one of Napa Valley's most historic estates. In 1900, French chemist Georges de Latour and his wife Fernande bought their first land in Rutherford, and the winery is named for Fernande's reaction to the property: "Quel beau lieu!" or "What a beautiful place!" BV kept making wine through Prohibition thanks to a contract, held since 1907, to produce sacramental wine for the Catholic Church. In 1938 de Latour hired enologist André Tchelistcheff, whose work led to the first Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon with the 1940 vintage. More than 80 years later it is still BV's flagship: the 2021 Private Reserve earned 96 points and was named Wine Spectator's No. 2 Wine of 2024. BV continues to make Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon alongside a broader Napa Valley lineup, welcomes visitors for tastings and tours at its Rutherford home, and sells direct at bvwines.com.
