Benovia takes its name from the fathers of its founders — Ben Dewane and Novian Anderson — and the work ethic they passed on. Mary Dewane and Joe Anderson spent their careers in healthcare serving underserved communities before buying the Cohn Vineyard near Healdsburg in the early 2000s and, in 2005, purchasing the former Hartman Lane winery from DeLoach founder Cecil De Loach. They brought in Mike Sullivan, then a decade into a celebrated run at Hartford Family Winery, as winemaker and co-owner. Benovia farms three estate sites totaling roughly 72 acres — Cohn, the 12-acre Tilton Hill on the Sonoma Coast, and the 42-acre Martaella surrounding the winery — producing about 6,000 cases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plus small lots of Zinfandel and Grenache. Sullivan moved to a consulting role in 2026, with longtime associate Adolfo Hernández promoted to winemaker.
