Black Stallion Estate Winery takes its name from the history of its site on the Silverado Trail, which was once the Silverado Horseman's Center, an equestrian complex developed by Richard Tam and Ben Hardister that opened in September 1963 and operated through the 1990s. Brothers Terrance and Michael Maglich founded the winery, released its first wines in 2002 and opened the hospitality center to the public in May 2007. In 2010 the Indelicato family, owners of Delicato Family Wines, bought Black Stallion and expanded its reach. The lineup ranges from widely available Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to small-lot reds such as a Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, a Howell Mountain Zinfandel and Bucephalus, a red blend named after Alexander the Great's horse, along with whites like Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino. In 2023 Wine Enthusiast named Black Stallion its American Winery of the Year, a major honor for a winery its age.
