Kyle Gellis founded Warped Cigars in Miami at eighteen, building a reputation for tiny, hand-rolled Cuban-style batches he blends himself. He first came to Napa Valley looking for agricultural knowledge — wondering whether grape growing held the same relationship to place that tobacco does — and ended up drawn to the cellar instead. The debut Blue Monster was a 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon drawn from three blocks of Yountville's Sleeping Lady Vineyard, made at Benoit Touquette's Fait-Main facility and released in 2018 strictly through a mailing list run on seniority. From the 2019 vintage the wine has come from Las Posadas on Howell Mountain, farmed by David Abreu — around 2,000 feet, above the fog line, surrounded by protected fir and pine, red Aiken soils over white tufa, with walls built from the rocks cleared off the site. Gellis takes only the interior rows of his block, working with Lloyd Matthews of Nine Suns.
