BOND is Bill Harlan's study of Napa Valley's grand cru hillsides, made only from Cabernet Sauvignon. The name is his mother's maiden name, and the labels are designed to resemble old bank and bond notes. Rather than owning one estate, BOND partners with growers on a handful of exceptional sites, manages the vines with its own team for years before using the fruit, and bottles each site separately, much as a Burgundy domaine bottles its crus. The lineup covers five single-vineyard wines: Melbury, Pluribus from about 1,100 feet in the Spring Mountain District, Quella, first made in 2006, St. Eden near Oakville, and Vecina, an 11-acre block of Vine Hill Ranch on the southern edge of Oakville first bottled in 1999. A blended second wine, Matriarch, draws from the same sites. Each single-vineyard wine runs only about 450 to 600 cases a year. Cory Empting has been part of the BOND team since 2000, and Will Harlan now leads the family's properties as managing director.
