Ed Fitts spent four decades in business, more than half as a partner at Dopaco making packaging for fast-food chains, and knew almost nothing about wine when he bought 110 acres on Pritchard Hill in 2005 from the Long family — intending mainly to retire on the view. Three acres were already planted; the inaugural 2009 vintage was made at Vineyard 29 until BRAND's own cellars opened in 2012, with Philippe Melka consulting from the start. The name and double-horseshoe logo come from Ed's love of horses, the rusted iron of a branding iron echoing the iron-rich red rock that passes for soil up here. Former Apple executives Jim Bean and Christine O'Sullivan bought the estate in 2019 and kept Melka on. Roughly 1,000 cases come off 15 acres planted between 1,200 and 1,400 feet, with Cabernet Franc taking equal billing to Cabernet Sauvignon and a white blend of Ribolla Gialla, Fiano and Greco di Tufo that exists nowhere else on the hill.
