Bryant Estate, long known as Bryant Family Vineyard, is one of the original Napa Valley cult Cabernets. Donald L. Bryant Jr. bought the Pritchard Hill site in the mid-1980s and planted about 13 acres, all Cabernet Sauvignon, on the slopes overlooking Lake Hennessey east of St. Helena. The first vintage, 1992, was made by Helen Turley, and the wine's reputation grew quickly: Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored the 1993 through 1997 vintages 97, 98, 99, 99 and 100 points, putting Bryant in the same conversation as Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Over the years the winemaking team has included consulting enologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Kathryn Carothers, and the estate is now led by proprietor Bettina S. Bryant. The flagship remains a single estate Cabernet Sauvignon, produced in small quantities and sold mostly through a mailing list, which makes it one of the harder Napa wines to find on retail shelves.
