Calcareous Vineyard

Calcareous Vineyard was founded in 2000 by father-daughter team Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown, longtime beverage distributors from Iowa who set out to build something of their own in Paso Robles. They chose 442 acres atop one of the highest limestone plateaus on the region's west side, reaching 1,800 feet above sea level, where solid calcareous bedrock gives the estate its name. Jason Joyce, who studied organic chemistry at Cal Poly before a harvest internship changed his path, has served as head winemaker since 2010, working with Rhone and Bordeaux varietals planted in small interplanted blocks down the estate's steep, chalky slopes. The winery marked its 25th anniversary in 2026, and the tasting room atop the property remains known for sweeping panoramic views across westside Paso Robles alongside its terroir-driven blends and single-varietal wines.
