Carter Cellars was founded in 1998 by Mark Carter, a longtime resident of Eureka, California, who also founded the Carter House Inns there. The first vintage, 1998, was made by Nils Venge, and Carter Cellars quickly earned a reputation for powerful, high-scoring Cabernet Sauvignon. The label focuses on single-vineyard Cabernets from some of Napa Valley's most famous sites, including Beckstoffer's To Kalon, Las Piedras and Missouri Hopper vineyards, along with the Fortuna Vineyard. Bottlings carry names such as The Three Kings, The Haze, Bourn and G.T.O., alongside vineyard-designated wines. Russel Bevan now makes the wines. Carter Cellars is produced at Envy in Calistoga, the winery Mark Carter co-founded with Nils Venge, and tastings by appointment are hosted there. Production is small and sold mainly through the mailing list. For HeyVino readers, Carter is a way to taste Beckstoffer vineyard Cabernet from a producer with a strong collector following.
