Charter Oak may be the least modernized commercial winery in Napa Valley, and that is entirely the point. Rob Fanucci — a St. Helena real estate and tax attorney by day — makes wine in the cellar beneath the same 1900 farmhouse on Charter Oak Avenue where his grandfather Guido Ragghianti, an immigrant from Lucca who reached St. Helena in 1920, made wine for the family. Rob learned during Guido's final harvest in 1986, when his grandfather was 98 and spoke to him only in Italian, and he still presses everything by hand in Guido's wooden basket press from around 1900, using the old punch-down tools including a purple-stained implement resembling an oversized baseball bat. Production stays near 1,000 cases of Zinfandel, old-vine Petite Sirah, Mount Veeder Cabernet and an old-world field blend. The property doubles as the studio of Rob's wife Layla Fanucci, a painter shown from the Carrousel du Louvre to New York.
