Chateau Montelena is one of Napa Valley's most historic wineries, founded in 1882 by entrepreneur Alfred L. Tubbs at the foot of Mount St. Helena near Calistoga. After decades of dormancy, the estate was revived when lawyer James L. Barrett became a partner in 1968, replanted the vineyard and restarted winemaking in 1972. Just four years later, Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay placed first among the white wines at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, beating top white Burgundies and helping put California wine on the world map. The story later inspired the film Bottle Shock. Today the winery is known as much for its Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the Calistoga property, as for its Chardonnay, and it also makes Zinfandel and Riesling. Bo Barrett, Jim's son, led the winery for many years. The stone chateau, with its Chinese-inspired garden and Jade Lake, remains one of the most visited landmarks in northern Napa Valley.
