Cimarossa is a small Howell Mountain estate owned by Dr. Dino Dina and his wife, Dr. Cornelia Dina, known as Corry, who bought the property in 1997. The estate covers 60 acres at elevations from about 1,600 to 2,100 feet, with 15 acres planted to vines in Howell Mountain's thin volcanic soils, high above the valley's fog line. The first vintage came in 2003. Since 2009 the wines have been made by Mia Klein, a highly respected Napa winemaker known for balanced, age-worthy Cabernet. The focus is mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, including the Riva di Ponente bottling, and the estate's elevation and soils give the wines firm structure and concentrated dark fruit. The name, Italian for red summit, nods to both the family's Italian heritage and the estate's mountaintop setting. Production is small and sold mainly direct. For HeyVino readers, Cimarossa is a quiet, under-the-radar Howell Mountain producer that rewards fans of classic mountain Cabernet.
