Clos Pegase was founded in 1984 by art dealers Jan and Mitsuko Shrem, who wanted a winery where wine and art could meet. Its striking postmodern building at 1060 Dunaweal Lane in Calistoga was designed by architect Michael Graves, chosen through an international design competition that reportedly drew 96 entries, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about pieces of architecture in Napa Valley. The winery is named for Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek myth, and art has always been part of the visit. In 2024 Adair Family Wines, led by Jay and Tammi Adair, bought Clos Pegase, restored the property and reopened it with a grand celebration, bringing rotating exhibitions of emerging artists back to the estate and planning a 2026 Artist Series of wines with original label artwork. Clos Pegase is known for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, and it is one of the most distinctive tasting experiences at the northern end of Napa Valley.
