Corra was founded in 2004 by Celia Welch, one of Napa Valley's most respected winemakers and the creator of Scarecrow, the cult Cabernet from Rutherford. Welch was born in Oregon, studied at UC Davis and worked in New Zealand and Australia and at Silverado Vineyards before building a consulting career that included work with Staglin in the 1990s. Corra is her own label, named after a Celtic goddess of prophecy. The wines come from four vineyards on the western side of Napa Valley, in the Oaklands area and Rutherford, and on the eastern slopes of Pritchard Hill, and the lineup is focused tightly on Cabernet Sauvignon, with three Cabernets including two single-vineyard bottlings. Production is very limited and sold mainly through a mailing list, so Corra is best known to collectors who follow Welch's work. For HeyVino readers, it offers the style of the winemaker behind Scarecrow at a smaller, more personal scale, with fruit from both sides of the valley.
