Covert Estate is a small Coombsville winery founded by three couples: Julien and Élan Fayard, Cal and Pam Nicholson, and Dave and Laura Nestor. They bought the site at 15 Chateau Lane in Napa in 2012 and brought in their first harvest there in 2015. The property covers 12 acres, with 4.5 planted to vines, and is farmed biodynamically with certification, alongside Napa Green certification and solar power. Julien Fayard, a French-born winemaker who trained at Château Lafite-Rothschild and worked alongside Philippe Melka, makes the wines. The focus is Cabernet Sauvignon, including a bottling from the prized clone 341, along with Cabernet Franc. Visits are by appointment and take place in a 12,000 square foot cave, with a 115-year-old oak grove on the property. For HeyVino readers, Covert is a good example of the new generation of Coombsville estates making precise, cool-climate Cabernet with a strong environmental focus.
