Davies Vineyards is the red wine side of the Davies family, best known for Schramsberg, the sparkling wine house Jack and Jamie Davies revived in the 1960s on Diamond Mountain near Calistoga. Their son Hugh Davies leads the red wine program. The family's 42 acres of vines on Diamond Mountain are planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Malbec, and they are the source of the J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon, named for Jack L. Davies, which debuted with the 2001 vintage. Jamie Davies is credited with launching that first estate Cabernet, and Hugh developed the vineyard and wine style with the winemaking team. Davies Vineyards also makes Pinot Noirs in partnership with growers on the North Coast. Diamond Mountain's volcanic soils give the Cabernets dark fruit and firm tannins, and the wines are built to age. For HeyVino readers, Davies is a chance to taste mountain Cabernet from one of Napa Valley's most respected wine families.
