Detert Family Vineyards is a small Oakville estate with a famous pedigree. The family bought the property in 1954, and the land was once part of the historic To Kalon Vineyard, the Oakville site behind many of Napa Valley's most celebrated Cabernets. For decades the family sold its grapes to other wineries, until it made its own first vintage in 2000. Brothers Tom Garrett, the winemaker, and John Garrett run the estate with partner Bill Cover. What makes Detert unusual is its planting: of 18 acres, 17 are Cabernet Franc and only one is Cabernet Sauvignon, so the winery is one of the leading specialists in Napa Cabernet Franc. The lineup includes a Cabernet Franc, an East Block Cabernet Franc and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Production is small and sold mainly to a mailing list. For HeyVino readers, Detert is a rare chance to taste To Kalon-area fruit through the lens of Cabernet Franc rather than the usual Cabernet Sauvignon.
