Dominus Estate is the Napa Valley home of Christian Moueix, the Bordeaux vintner long associated with Pomerol's Château Pétrus. The estate is the historic Napanook vineyard near Yountville, land where George C. Yount planted some of Napa Valley's first vines. John Daniel Jr., of the Inglenook family, acquired Napanook in 1946, and in 1982 Moueix partnered with Daniel's daughters, Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, to make wine there. Moueix became sole owner in 1995. The estate produces two Bordeaux-style reds: Dominus, the flagship, and Napanook, a second wine first released in 1996. The winery building, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, is famous in its own right for walls of local basalt stones held in wire gabions that let light and air filter through. With its blend of Bordeaux philosophy and Napa fruit, Dominus is a reference point for Cabernet-based wines from the Yountville area.
