El Molino dates to 1871, making it one of the first wineries in Napa Valley, and its label still uses the original design depicting the neighboring Bale Grist Mill — "el molino" in Spanish. The property went dark at Prohibition and stayed that way for nearly eighty years until Reg and Marie Oliver, who moved the family from Manhattan in 1981, restored the winery and released a Pinot Noir in 1987 and a Chardonnay in 1988. Reg planted Burgundian varieties in the heart of Cabernet country, sourcing from the 68-acre Star Vineyard on the Rutherford bench. Since his death in 2005 his daughter Lily Oliver Berlin and her husband Jon have run the estate, still using whole-cluster fermentation, foot treading, native yeasts and much of the same equipment as the 1987 restart.
