Envy Wines was founded in Calistoga in 2006 by Mark Carter and Nils Venge, a winemaker known for some of Napa Valley's highest-scoring Cabernets. The winery sits at 1170 Tubbs Lane at the northern end of the valley, on a 17-acre estate planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, and it also sources fruit from select vineyards around Napa Valley. Production is close to 2,500 cases a year, small enough that most wines are sold through the tasting room and wine club. The lineup leans toward rich, ripe reds, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah at the center, and a Sauvignon Blanc from the estate. Envy's roots trace back to a Victorian bed and breakfast from the mid-1980s, and the winery is also the production and tasting home for Carter Cellars, Mark Carter's cult Cabernet label. For visitors, Envy is a relaxed Calistoga stop where you can taste two related brands in one place.
