Frog's Leap was founded in 1981 by John Williams, who came to Napa Valley in the mid-1970s and became the first employee of Warren Winiarski at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars before starting his own label. The winery's playful name combines "Stag's Leap," where Williams got his start, with "Frog Farm," the site of the earliest vintages — a nod carried through today on corks stamped "ribbit." In 1994 the winery moved to its permanent home in the historic Red Barn in Rutherford, built in 1884. Frog's Leap has farmed organically since 1989 and dry-farms virtually all of its roughly 200 acres of estate vineyards, producing Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Zinfandel with a signature style of balance and restraint. John's son Rory Williams now leads the vineyard and farming program alongside his father.
