Grgich Hills Estate was founded in 1977 in Rutherford by Miljenko "Mike" Grgich and Austin Hills of the Hills Bros. coffee family, following Grgich's landmark victory at the 1976 "Judgment of Paris" — where his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay beat top white Burgundies in a blind tasting and put Napa Valley on the global wine map. The Croatian-born Grgich, who arrived in America with only a suitcase, remained winemaker emeritus until his death in 2023 at age 100; his daughter Violet Grgich now serves as President and CEO. Grgich Hills farms over 360 acres across five estate vineyards spanning Rutherford, Yountville, Calistoga, and Carneros, and is one of only three Napa Valley wineries with all estate vineyards Certified Regenerative Organic.
