Hagafen Cellars was founded in 1979 by Ernie Weir with partners Zach Berkowitz, Norm Miller and Rene di Rosa, and it was the first kosher winery in California. Ernie and his wife, Irit Weir, later took full ownership and have run the winery as a family business for decades from its home on the Silverado Trail in Napa Valley. Hagafen set out to prove that kosher wine could stand alongside the best of Napa, and it succeeded: its Riesling was served at a 1981 White House state dinner honoring Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and Hagafen wines have been poured at the White House many times since. The name comes from the Hebrew blessing over wine. Cabernet Sauvignon is a flagship red, and the premium tier is bottled under the Prix label. For HeyVino readers, Hagafen is the go-to Napa producer for high-quality kosher Cabernet, and its wines are a natural fit for holiday tables and gifting.
