Heibel Ranch farms under two acres of vines on a 186-acre Pope Valley property, the last piece of what was once a 1,300-acre family holding. Trent Ghiringhelli's maternal grandfather, George Bennett Heibel, left Victoria, Texas during the Depression, cooked at the Women's City Club in San Francisco, and in 1945 bought the Aetna Springs Resort — 1,500 acres dating to 1873, complete with a golf course laid out in 1893 — which the family ran for some thirty years. On his father's side, an Italian great-grandfather reached the Rutherford area in 1912. Trent began clearing the vineyard site in 2000, and family and friends installed a weir and a mile of four-inch pipe by hand to bring spring water down; the first vintage followed roughly a decade later. Production stays under 400 cases from CCOF-certified organic fruit, and visits begin with a tour in Sugar Magnolia, a 1963 Willys jeep.
