Hope Family Wines traces back to 1978, when Chuck and Marlyn Hope moved their family from Bakersfield to a then-little-known Paso Robles, planting apple orchards and grapevines on what became the Hope Family Vineyards in the Templeton Gap District. Their son Austin Hope grew up working the vineyards, and after his uncle Paul's sudden death in the mid-1990s, took over the winery at 26, launching the Treana label in 1996 with Paso Robles' first Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Austin's namesake label followed in 2000 with estate-grown Rhône wines, and the 2015-vintage Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon helped establish Paso Robles as a serious region for the variety. Chuck and Marlyn also helped found both the Paso Robles AVA (1983) and the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. Today Hope Family Wines spans six labels — Austin Hope, Treana, Quest, AUSTIN, Liberty School, and Troublemaker — and was named Wine Enthusiast's 2022 American Winery of the Year.
