Lail Vineyards carries one of the longest family histories in Napa Valley. Founder Robin Lail is the daughter of John Daniel Jr., who modernized the historic Inglenook estate, and a descendant of Inglenook's founder, Gustave Niebaum. Before starting her own label she helped create Dominus with Christian Moueix in 1982 and co-founded Merryvale with Bill Harlan. Lail's first wine, the J. Daniel Cuvée, was released in 1995 and named for her father; since 2001 it has been 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The family owns the 2.5-acre Totem Vineyard and the 3-acre Mole Hill Vineyard on Howell Mountain at about 1,600 feet, and also sources fruit from Coombsville, Dutch Henry Canyon, Oakville and St. Helena. Philippe Melka consults on the wines. Alongside the J. Daniel Cuvée, the range includes Mole Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, first released in 2007, and Blueprint, the more accessible second wine.
