Levy & McClellan is the personal project of two winemakers with deep roots in Napa's top estates. Bob Levy, a UC Davis graduate, worked at Cuvaison, Rombauer and Merryvale before joining Harlan in 1998, where he became winemaker for Harlan Estate and BOND. Martha McClellan studied political science at Michigan and viticulture at Geisenheim in Germany, supervised winemaking at Harlan and later became winemaker at Sloan. Together they farm a six-acre family vineyard off Franz Valley School Road west of Calistoga, at about 600 feet. Their first vintage, 2004, amounted to roughly 300 cases of a single red blend, about 92 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine was snapped up by a mailing list almost immediately, and it remains one of the more under-the-radar ways to taste the style of two winemakers who shaped some of Napa's most famous Cabernets.
