Lewelling Vineyards grows on Lewelling Ranch in St. Helena, one of the oldest family farms in Napa Valley. John Lewelling established the ranch in 1864, and the family has farmed it ever since; today the property covers about 200 acres, with about 85 acres of vines on the valley floor. Lewelling fruit has long been sought by other winemakers, and it appears in bottlings from respected small producers. In 1992 Dave Wight founded the Lewelling family label, focused on Cabernet Sauvignon from the ranch. Sixth-generation family member Haley Wight now stewards the property, and she also makes wine under her own separate label, Hayfork, first made in 2006 at Terra Valentine. The St. Helena valley floor is warm and sheltered, and it produces ripe, generous Cabernet. For HeyVino readers, Lewelling is a living link to Napa Valley's 19th-century farming roots, offering estate Cabernet from a family that has worked the same land for more than 160 years.
