Maybach Family Vineyards is a small, family-owned Cabernet Sauvignon producer founded by Chris Maybach, a UC Berkeley graduate who worked as a film editor and producer in Hollywood before turning to wine. The first vintage was 2004, and winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has made every vintage since that start. The flagship, Materium, comes from the Weitz Vineyard in Oakville, while Amoenus is grown on a hillside site in western Calistoga, giving the lineup a contrast between valley-floor and mountain Cabernet. A third bottling, Vocabulum, was added more recently. Production is tiny and sold mostly through a mailing list, so the wines are best known among collectors who follow Thomas Rivers Brown's work. For anyone exploring Napa Cabernet beyond the big names, Maybach is a good example of how a single talented winemaker and a few carefully chosen sites can build a cult following in under two decades.
