Nickel & Nickel was created by Gil and Beth Nickel, the couple who revived Far Niente in 1979, as a winery devoted entirely to single-vineyard wines. The first vintage, 1997, was made at the Napa Wine Company, and the guiding rule has stayed the same ever since: each wine comes from one vineyard and, with rare exceptions such as the 2004 Lightning Strike blend, one grape variety, so the differences between sites can shine through. Today the winery makes around 26 different wines, many of them Cabernet Sauvignons from named vineyards across Napa Valley. The Oakville home base at 8164 Highway 29 is a 42-acre property that includes the John C. Sullenger Vineyard, and guests are hosted in the restored Sullenger House, which dates from 1884. Beneath the property sits a 30,000 square foot cellar, described as perhaps the largest underground cellar on the valley floor. Nickel & Nickel is now part of the Far Niente family of wineries.
