O'Shaughnessy Estate Winery is owned by Betty O'Shaughnessy Woolls and her husband, Paul Woolls, and released its first commercial vintage in 2000. The winery is on Howell Mountain near Angwin, and the family also owns mountain vineyards on the other side of the valley on Mount Veeder, including Betty's Vineyard at about 1,600 feet and the 265-acre Woolls Ranch. That two-mountain footprint is the heart of the winery: O'Shaughnessy makes separate Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignons that show how volcanic eastern slopes and cooler western slopes shape the same grape, along with an Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that draws on both. Sean Capiaux was the founding winemaker, and Aaron Elam has more recently led the cellar. The wines are concentrated and structured in the classic mountain style, made in limited quantities and sold mainly direct, which makes O'Shaughnessy a strong pick for readers who love Napa hillside Cabernet.
