Perchance Estates is named for the chain of chance encounters that created it: a patient mentioned Thomas Keller to Katie Papadakis during a dental appointment, which led to a French Laundry reservation, which eventually led to a meeting with winemaker Mike Smith. Founded in 2019 by Katie and Dean Papadakis together with Heath and Cary Fear, the label debuted with a 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer Georges III in Rutherford — the vineyard once farmed under André Tchelistcheff — and has since added Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet, Carneros Lake Chardonnay and old-vine Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1990. Production sits around 500 cases a year, sold largely through their allocation list, with tastings by appointment only.
