Piña Napa Valley belongs to a family with some of the deepest roots in the valley. The family traces its Napa history to ancestor Bluford Stice, who settled in Napa Valley in 1856, and in 1960 John Piña and his wife, Arline, founded the family's vineyard management company, which has farmed vineyards for many wineries across the valley. The family made its first commercial wine, a Chardonnay, in 1979. Today Piña Napa Valley is known for single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from family-owned sites, including the Firehouse Vineyard in Rutherford and the Buckeye Vineyard on Howell Mountain, which lets the winery show the contrast between a classic valley-floor site and a mountain vineyard. The winery welcomes visitors in Rutherford. For HeyVino readers, Piña is a grower family's winery, offering Cabernets from the same people who have farmed Napa vineyards for generations, and its single-vineyard lineup is a good way to compare Rutherford and Howell Mountain side by side.
