Porter Family Vineyards is owned by Tom and Beverly Porter and sits in the hills on the eastern edge of Coombsville, just east of the city of Napa. The property was previously owned by Richard and Sheila Perry, and the Porters have built it into a family winery with about 20 acres, 14 of them planted to vines, and an impressive 17,000 square feet of caves dug into the hillside for making and aging the wines. Family members have been part of the work, including daughter Heather, who previously assisted in the cellar. The lineup includes estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Time and Barre Azul, along with the Sandpiper RosΓ©. Coombsville, in the cool southeastern corner of Napa Valley and an official AVA since 2011, gives the wines brighter acidity and a more savory profile than many valley-floor Cabernets, and the Porters' hillside site adds depth and concentration. For HeyVino readers, Porter Family Vineyards is a small, welcoming way to explore Coombsville with a cave tasting.
