Promontory is the Harlan family's newest Napa Valley estate, a remote, wild property in the eastern foothills that straddles the border between Oakville and Yountville, hidden from the valley floor behind a ridgeline. Bill Harlan first noticed the site in the 1980s and bought it in 2008, after it had earlier been developed by Girard Winery. The estate covers about 840 acres, but only around 80 acres are planted to vines, scattered across rugged slopes with varied volcanic and sedimentary soils. The first vintage was 2009. The wine is a single proprietary red, made by winemaker David Cilli with Cory Empting overseeing winegrowing, and the team has been replanting the vineyard block by block. Will Harlan, Bill's son, is managing director of the family's properties. Promontory shares Harlan Estate's long-term outlook and is sold mainly through allocation, with tastings at the estate by appointment.
