Pugliese Vineyards has been a family-run fixture on Long Island's North Fork since 1980, when Brooklyn natives Ralph and Patricia Pugliese bought a stretch of open farmland in Cutchogue and began planting Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon by hand with their four children, with no machinery to help. Today the 55-acre property is one of the oldest vineyards on the North Fork, known locally as "The Winery in the Hollow." Ralph served as winemaker until his death in 2011; Patricia now runs the winery as sole owner, still greeting guests in the tasting room most days. Pugliese is especially known for its sparkling wines and Ports, and for Patricia's hand-painted Champagne bottles and glasses, sold as personalized gift baskets. The tasting grounds center on a koi pond and grape arbor, with live music on weekends.
