Revana Estate was built from raw land by Dr. Madaiah Revana, a Houston cardiologist who grew up one of ten children on a farm in a village near Bangalore with no running water or electricity, raising rice, sugar cane, mangoes and coconuts. He first saw Napa on a bus tour as a medical resident in the mid-1970s; returning for a conference in 1997, he bought a west-benchland parcel in St. Helena on the advice of viticulturist Jim Barbour, who called it the last best piece of property left on the valley floor. Vines went in the following year and Heidi Barrett — then making Screaming Eagle, Grace and Dalla Valle — crafted the inaugural 2001 Cabernet. The estate winery opened in 2004, Thomas Rivers Brown took over winemaking in 2011, and the 2007 Cabernet was named the fourth-best wine in the world by Wine Spectator. Revana also owns Alexana in Oregon and Corazón del Sol in Argentina.
