Rutherford Hill helped pioneer Napa Valley Merlot in the 1970s, betting on the variety when Cabernet dominated the conversation, and it remains one of the valley's best-known Merlot houses. Perched above the Rutherford Bench with nearly a mile of aging caves, the winery is owned by the Terlato family and offers one of the valley's classic picnic-and-view experiences.
