Traces its history to 1978, when Ernie and Virginia Van Asperen and business partner Charlie Abela founded the Round Hill winery on the property, inside a building that had itself once been an abandoned 1880 winery. Ernie, a WWII B-24 bomber pilot, had already built Ernie's Wine and Liquor into more than 80 Bay Area stores before entering winemaking; today the Rutherford estate is owned by Marko and Theo Zaninovich, who acquired it in 2000, and its portfolio centers on Cabernet Sauvignon from the AVA's most widely planted grape.
