Scarlett is a small Rutherford label built on a long family history. E.J. McGah bought the family's Rutherford property, and his grandson Sherratt Reicher later launched Scarlett, with the first vintage in 2006. The family's two properties cover about 65 acres in southern Rutherford near Ponti Lane, an area of the Rutherford Bench long prized for Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Mike Smith, hired after interviews in 2009, makes the wines, which range from Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pennant Estate red blend to Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Sauvignon Blanc. The McGah Family Vineyard name appears on several bottlings, and the vineyard's single-variety Petit Verdot is an unusual find in a valley dominated by Cabernet blends. Production is small, and the wines are sold mainly through the winery's list. For HeyVino readers, Scarlett is a way to taste Rutherford estate fruit from a family that has farmed the land for generations without the big-brand price tag.
