Shadybrook Estate is the Coombsville winery of David and Alice Alkosser, who bought their first Napa Valley property there in 2005. The estate covers about 25 acres, with 12 planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Shadybrook vineyard has also supplied fruit to well-regarded Coombsville wines from other producers. Winemaker Rudy Zuidema makes the Shadybrook wines, which center on estate Cabernet Sauvignon and also include a Malbec, the V Blend, Platiné Blanc and a Rapp Ranch Pinot Noir. One unusual bottling is Monetin, a kosher Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives the winery a niche many Napa estates do not fill. Coombsville, in the cool southeastern part of Napa Valley, is known for Cabernet with bright acidity and savory depth. Shadybrook welcomes guests for tastings by appointment and runs wine clubs, and it has become a gathering place for events in the district. For HeyVino readers, it is a friendly, approachable stop for cool-climate Napa Cabernet.
