Sherwin Family Vineyards is a family-run estate in the Spring Mountain District founded by Steve and Linda Sherwin, who made their first vintage, a Cabernet Sauvignon, in 1996. The property covers about 30 acres, with roughly 16 planted to vines: about 15 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon plus smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Steve Sherwin makes the wines, with much of the hands-on work now handled by son Matt, who also serves as general manager, so the winery is very much a family affair. The lineup is anchored by the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and includes Persevere, a Merlot, a Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and the playful Cellar Scraps blend, along with a separate M.S. label. The estate's mountain setting above St. Helena gives the reds the firm structure and dark fruit Spring Mountain is known for. Sherwin is a relaxed, personal alternative to the bigger names on the mountain, with visits by appointment.
