Sloan Estate is a small hillside property in the eastern part of the Rutherford appellation, founded in 1997 by Stuart Sloan. He bought 40 acres and planted just 13 of them, at elevations from about 875 feet to almost 1,000 feet, with the vineyard planted by David Abreu. The first Sloan wine, a proprietary red made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, was produced in 2000 and quickly earned a cult following. Mark Aubert was the first winemaker, Martha McClellan took over in 2004, and consultant Michel Rolland and winemaker Brad Grimes have also worked on the wines. In 2011 Sutong Pan and Jenny Pan bought the estate for a reported 40 million dollars. Production is very limited and sold mainly to a mailing list, so most people encounter Sloan at auction or on high-end restaurant lists. The site's elevation and eastern exposure set it apart from the valley-floor Rutherford vineyards nearby.
