Stags' Leap Winery is one of the oldest properties in its namesake district and is a separate winery from the better-known Stag's Leap Wine Cellars nearby. Its story begins in 1893, when Horace Chase and his wife, Minnie Mizner Chase, planted the 240-acre estate and built a 19th-century manor house that is now used for tastings and visits. Carl Doumani bought the property in 1971 and made Petite Sirah the winery's signature, a reputation that still follows it today. Beringer Wine Estates acquired Stags' Leap Winery in 1997, and it is now owned by Treasury Wine Estates. Alongside Petite Sirah, the winery makes Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate, which sits beneath the rocky Stags Leap palisades that gave the district its name. A visit to the restored manor and gardens is one of the more historic tasting experiences in the Stags Leap District, and the apostrophe placement in the name is the quickest way to tell the two wineries apart.
