Tamber Bey is named for Tamborina and Bayamo, the first two Arabian endurance horses owned by founder Barry Waitte — an early Apple employee from 1982 to 1994 who later worked at AOL before leaving tech for wine in 1999, buying vineyards in Yountville and Oakville and seeking out Robert Mondavi, Andy Beckstoffer and Ren Harris as mentors. The first vintage in 2001 was fifty cases. In 2012 Waitte bought Sundance Ranch in Calistoga — a 22-acre equestrian property whose previous owner hosted Robert Redford during the filming of The Horse Whisperer — and converted the covered riding arena into a 60,000-gallon winery designed by Thomas Brown, operational for the 2013 harvest. Guests taste stableside in a Howard Backen-designed barn courtyard among more than forty horses, including residents of Napa County's largest horse rescue.
